Return to Monkey Island It begins with Guybrush searching for a ship and crew so he can finally discover the secret of Monkey Island. However, after speaking with the new pirate leaders of Melee Island, it soon becomes clear that it won’t be possible to do so. As a result, the mighty pirate decides to travel aboard the ship of his mortal enemy LeChuck, who is also planning a trip to the series’ titular island.
Naturally, the first step in accomplishing this is to head to LeChuck’s ship, where Return to Monkey Island players will be able to talk to the quartermaster and ask him about a job. As it happens, the crew is missing a swabbie, however, to be considered for the position, Guybrush will first need to get his hands on a mop. Naturally, really Monkey Island fashion, doing so proves to be far from simple.
How to make a mop in Return to Monkey Island
If they haven’t already, players should head to the International House of Mojo in the Low Street area and pick up both the Knife and the forgiveness frog of the wooden shelf in front of the voodoo lady. While on Low Street, they should also examine the plaque under the statue of Carla, the former swordswoman and now the ruler of Melee Island. This will reveal that she fought bravely in Santo Domingo, which will come in handy a bit later.
Once everything is taken care of, players need to return to SCUMM’s bar on the docks and go through the door on the far right to reach the kitchen. They will then need to talk to the chef, who will tell Guybrush that he needs to make his own mop from scratch instead of just buying one. This means that players will need to track down a mop-handle tree and carve a mango out of one of its branches.
However, instead of blindly heading into the woods to search for this rare specimen, players should go to Wally’s shop on Low Street and ask him to make a map for them. Unfortunately, the long-suffering cartographer needs a sample of wood from the mop handle tree to plot its location. Fortunately, the trip was not completely wasted, as players can help themselves Monocle from the box on Wally’s desk while they’re here.
After taking the Monocle, players must return to the SCUMM bar and speak to the chef one more time to learn that a difficult customer is asking him to prepare a dish containing “Ingredients” that he recently ate while visiting the Governor’s mansion. While on the subject of the Governor, players must examine her re-election poster, which can be found attached to a building on the left side of the dock area. In doing so, they will learn that Carla is dedicated to dedication.
Players must then head to the Governor’s mansion and speak to Carla upon arrival. After exhausting all dialogue options, you can walk over to the bookshelf to the left of the stairs and examine the yellow book titled “Ingredients”. They can borrow it, but Carla will reveal that she is still mad at Guybrush for a book he previously borrowed and never returned, and despite her best attempts to apologize to her, she adamantly refuses to forgive him.
Fortunately, players have a Forgiving Frog in their possession, though they will need to customize it before giving it to Carla if they want her to forgive Guybrush. This can be done by opening the bag and combining the Guybrush State of the Art Pen with the Forgiveness Frog. Players will then be faced with five different options on what to write on the back of the frog and must choose the following options:
- Dear Carla,
- Sorry for losing the book you lent me.
- I appreciate that you dedicate yourself to the dedication…
- …as evidenced by his actions in Santo Domingo.
- I have implemented a reminder system for myself.
It is worth noting here that the third option will not be available if players have not examined Carla’s re-election poster at the docksweather the fourth option will not be available until players have read the plaque under the statue in Low Street. However, assuming players have done both before, they will be able to sign the frog using the aforementioned options and then deliver it to Carla.
Once Carla has forgiven Guybrish, players must ask her again if they can borrow the Ingredients book. This time she will accept, after which, the players must return to the SCUMM bar and give the cookbook to the chef to distract him. While he is busy cooking the mystery food for the difficult customer, they can use the knife to carve a wooden slip of the mop handle by the door.
Players can also try to steal the chef’s mop by picking it up and trying to get out of the SCUMM bar while holding it. This will result in a humorous cutscene and will unlock the “Mop Heist” achievement for those who are playing the game on Steam.
With the wood sample now in their possession, players must return to Wally’s map shop on Low Street and turn it in to get the Mop Tree Map. They should grab another Monocle too, since you’re going to need two of them for one of the puzzles a bit further on. They can then take the map to the forest area, which is accessed through the interior map screen of the island. To get there, players can either follow the path to the right of the Governor’s mansion or go through the archway near the Melee Island lookout on the cliff.
Upon arrival, players need to head to the Deep Dark Forest area and then use the knife with the Carnivorous plant on the right side of the screen. Next, they simply need to follow Wally’s map to find the mop handle tree, which involves taking the right, left, left, and middle paths, respectively. They can then use the knife in conjunction with the mop handle tree and enjoy the fun sequence of events that follows. When they regain control, they will find a newly carved mop handle in Guybursh’s portfolio.
Now that they have a mop handle, players need to go back to the map screen and visit the area marked Shipyard. Here, at the former site of Stan’s previous-owned boats, you’ll find nothing but a small Sponge thrown on the floor. If they open their inventory, they will be able to combine the sponge with their newly acquired handle to get a Scrub. With him, Guybrush is now one step closer to landing a job on LeChuck’s pirate ship, though he’ll have to find a way to hide his identity before he can finally set sail for Monkey Island once more.
Return to Monkey Island is now available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
