First, we must begin by clarifying that hoverboards are not the only name by which these items are recognized.
They are also known as electric boards or self-balancing scooters
But I agree with you, “hoverboard” has a more appealing ring to it.

In short, hoverboards are electric-powered vehicles, most times with a two-wheel design, that serves as battery-powered standing personal vehicles.
Now that we know what to look for, let’s get to the “nitty-gritty”, our suggestions for the best hoverboard on the market today!
Some scooters are better suited for long-range, others are better when it comes to portability and others are designed exclusively for speed.
Much like a car, the satisfaction generated by the item will depend on the use that is given to the machine, as its performance will highly depend on it.
Without further ado, our top-10 for the best hoverboard to buy:
1. Swagtron T1 – Best hoverboard for the money
This category doesn’t necessarily speak of what the best budget hoverboard is, the best hoverboard for the money is the product that has the best feature to price ratio (in our humble opinion).
A brand you will see more times than we would like on this list, Swagtron takes the number one spot for performance to price ratio board with its model T1.
The T1 has a top speed of 8 mph and a maximum weight load of 220 Lbs .
Like all Swagtron products, this unit is UL2272 certified and comes equipped with two different riding modes.
The model T3 is the runner up on this section of the list and is probably worth taking a look at if you consider yourself a beginner rider .
The T1 is an overall acceptable scooter with all basic features covered .
It climbs steep 30-degree hills and speed on this item is not too bad.
It is not a stand-out in any category, but it isn’t subpar to any competitor at the same price range either, making this the best hoverboard for the money.
Features:
- Speed: 8 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 11 miles
- Incline Climb: 30-degree Hills
- Weight: 22 Lbs. / 10 kg
- Max. Weight Load: 220 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: Led Front Lights, 250-WATT motor

2. Halo Rover – Best Hoverboard for Adults
Remember how we mentioned weight to be one of the features to look for when buying a hoverboard?
Well, it just happens to be the key feature if you’re a full-grown adult .
200 pounds seems like an unachievable feat for many of us, but for many others, 200 pounds is pretty standard
In fact, the average male human sits at a weight somewhere around 199 pounds.
The Halo Rover is one of the most popular brands in the world.
First off, the Rover is UL2272 and UL2271 certified, which means exploding batteries are most likely out of the question with this unit.
We don’t know what Halo’s internal testing looks like, but the fact that the Rover is designed to act as “the best all-terrain hoverboard” and marketed as the “indestructible hoverboard” tells you a little about Halo Board’s internal testing criteria.
It would not surprise us if Halo Boards run water immersion testing on their batteries, but then again, we don’t know enough about the brand’s internal testing criteria to confirm it.
But it’s not just the testing criteria, the high-end aluminum frame and ability to climb 20-degree inclines are also a major feature for an all-terrain hoverboard.
With sturdy 8.5” wheels that give it an imposing look to the hoverboard and act as liability for its outdoor use claims.
The Rover also comes with Bluetooth music and mobile app compatibility, making it a choice that your neighbor will love when you hover down the walkway blasting some tunes.
Besides, the Rover comes in a wide variety of colors, including black, white, blue and even pink (if that’s the life decision you want to make).
Features
- Distance on Single Charge: 10 miles
- Incline Climb: 20-Degree hills
- Max. Weight Load: 265 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272/UL2271
- Other: Non-Flat 8.5” Tires, Aluminum Frame

3. Swagboard Twist Lithium Free Board – Best Hoverboard for Kids
The reasons why batteries can be so dangerous are many, but the main one is probably lithium leakage, which can result in explosions.
This is where the lithium free feature of the Swagboard comes in.
We know how safety is the main decision-maker when it comes to the little ones, so apart from the fact that we are letting them hop on a powered board, the least we can do is try to make it as safe as possible.
Swagtron’s Sentryshield patented trademark battery protection system, lower speeds and a fair price tag make this the best hoverboard for kids on this list.
The Twist goes fast enough to make it fun, but not fast enough to signify an imminent danger to your child.
With high speeds of 7 mph, this product positions itself as the best kids hoverboard.
The board is also UL2272 certified, making it safety compatible in most states.
Swagtron (the manufacturer brand) pride themselves on producing a high-quality product.
On this product, that quality standard is summarized by the easiness provided by the design to learn proper balance and eventually master riding the board.
Incredibly, Swagtron claims the Twist can climb hills with inclines of up to 30-degree angles.
The other Swagtron items are Bluetooth compatible, but the Twist isn’t, which again makes the case for the best hoverboard for 8-year-olds on top of the already clear claims of bent the best safest hoverboard.
Features
- Speed: 7 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 4.8 miles
- Incline Climb: 20-Degree hills
- Weight: 20 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 250 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: Lithium-free battery, 250W hub motors

4. Swagtron T580 – Best hoverboard under $200
We hate to repeat brands, but we also have to give credit where credit’s due.
And the T580 is probably the best value hoverboard on the market.
Given that it has the brand to grant you peace of mind and the certifications that enable that same aspect.
The T580 allows for a bit more speed than its younger brother the Twist at a 7.5 mph max, but unfortunately not as much as we would have liked it to offer, regarding that it’s an item meant for adult users.
Regardless, this item has other features that make up for its lack of serious speed. First the obvious one, pricing.
Besides, we feel confident in saying that the T580 takes the number one spot for the best inexpensive hoverboard.
Furthermore, it is still a good price to pay for a product with a reputable brand.
The Swagtron brand and basic features are not much of a sell when it comes to this hoverboard in comparison to high-end items, but the price tag set on this overall competitive item, make it THE unit to pick for under $200 USD.
This unit comes with UL2272 certification, making it a reassurance to both your wallet and safety.
The T580 is also Bluetooth compatible, which means you can jam to your favorite tunes when gliding down the street.
It can range up to 8-mile rides on a single charge and it comes with an ABS casing which Swagtron claims to be able to take a beating.
We agree that Swagtron offers a pretty nice deal here, with good materials and design.
However, the T580 comes up a little short when it comes to different terrains as it comes with small 6.5” wheels, same as the kid version of the Swags.
The truth is, the deal is sweet, but we don’t find a whole lot of difference with the Twist version of this hoverboard.
So, if you think you won’t be missing the Bluetooth speakers, then we suggest to just go with option number three on this list.
Features
- Speed: 7.5 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 8 miles
- Weight: 20 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 220 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: Bluetooth speakers

5. Razor Hovertrax 2.0 – Best hoverboard under $300
In terms of hoverboard shopping, reaching the $300 USD mark is on the high-end side of the coin
But a reasonable enough pricing to land you a nice brand, with a very attractive design and performance able to suit daily street use.
Enter the Razor Hovertrax.
When we mentioned a nice brand, we really meant it.
You might be too young to remember this, but back in the early 2000s, when the booming product was the manual scooter, it was Razor that led the charge.
Well, Razor is back again and better than ever.
With a product offering rides of up to 1-hour on a single charge, you have now found the best affordable hoverboard on this list.
Yes, under $200 USD is also affordable, but the Razor offers some key features that the Swagtron T580 doesn’t.
Even though the T580 sells you on toughness with an ABS housing, but truth be told, we much rather prefer the steel with shatter-resistant polymer body on the Hovertrax 2.0.
If you are a beginner, this nifty little gadget offers both training and normal modes.
It comes with a 36V lithium-ion battery pack, which speaks for itself on power, as an example: the world’s most sold battery-powered lawnmowers use packs with this same voltage.
If you are a speed buff, then you’re in luck, as Razor offers a 9-mph cruising speed allowing for up to 60-minutes of use.
Finally, this unit offers the EverBalance trademarked technology that helps the unit remain level for an easy mount and swift ride.
Also making the case for best self-balancing scooter, but that spot is already taken (coming up ahead).
In addition to the technical specs and features, Razor claims to be the first hoverboard brand in the U.S. to gain UL2272 certification.
Who comes first doesn’t really matter at this stage as most brands have the certification now, but it does speak for how serious the brand takes safety.
Features
- Speed: 9 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 9 miles
- Max. Weight Load: 220 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: 2 different riding modes, 350 WATT motors, Battery power indicator

6. Hoverzon S – Best self-balancing scooter
The Hoverzon S is a pretty standard design when it comes to hoverboard housings.
With an ID that looks very close to the classic Swagboard look, the Hoverzon is not much of a looker (if you ask us).
However, it’s not a bad option as an entry-level unit that will help you gain stability easily.
The Hoverzon has recently improved its system stabilizers and has reconfigured its design to be safety compliant in the U.S.
The new and improved stabilizing system makes it a great self-balancing scooter in addition to it’s independent motors feature that help the beginner user have a less drastic learning curve.
Features
- Speed: 7.5 mph
- Incline Climb: 30-Degree hills
- Weight: 22 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 220 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: 37V battery pac

7. Gyroor Warrior – Best hoverboard for the family
Which hoverboard is best for the family is a tricky question to ask.
There is no real hoverboard out there that can actually transport a whole family, is there?
That’s a joke… haha, right?
But in all seriousness, what defines a good family hoverboard?
Well, families are made up of several people with different shapes, sizes, and weights.
So, for starters, a family hoverboard has to be able to carry each and every one of them, from the youngest to the oldest and from the heaviest to the lightest.
It needs to be standard enough to be fun for an adult but also safe for a child.
And finally, it needs to be extremely durable to withstand the usage of 4-7 people daily.
While the Gyroor Warrior is actually considered an “Off-Road” product, it’s the sturdiness build for outdoors that crowns the Warrior as the best-rated hoverboard for families.
With a competitive $299.99 price tag, the Warrior has a 90% aluminum body with ABS components that make it sturdy and flexible enough to withstand falls and kicks.
The unit is designed for children ages 7 and above.
It uses Samsung battery cells with UL2272 certification, has self-balancing technology and allows for parents to monitor and adjust the speed through an app, making it a very safe hoverboard for children.
Not only that, but the APP actually comes with a child and adult mode option as well as the ability to check the riding track.
Features
- Speed: 9.95 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 9.5 miles
- Incline Climb: 30-degree hills
- Weight: 30.8 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 265 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: 90% aluminum casing, 350 WATT motors, Smart APP control

8. EPCTEK 6.5” UL2272 Listed Self Balancing Wheel Electric Scooter with Bluetooth – Best hoverboard for beginner
The only downside to this unit as a beginners’ item is its annoyingly long name.
Annoying because there is no way anyone will ever refer to it, but reasonable because of the vast range of options that Hoverheart offers in their product portfolio
Making it the best place to get a hoverboard if you don’t know what you’re looking for in an entry-level unit.
This item comes in almost all colors imaginable and has a 6.9” wheel diameter, making it a good enough to leave the house riding it but not thick enough to cut it as an off-road product.
Truth be told there is not a lot we can say that the name of the item doesn’t already say, but what we can vouch for is the Hoverheart range of options.
That said, the price isn’t too shabby either, is it?
Although Hoverheart hoverboards are not specifically known for offering the best quality, this item comes with a decent quality based on its price tag.
If you’re looking for an entre-level board but don’t want to make a big investment, Hoverheart is probably the way to go.
Keep in mind that if your needs involve leaving the house often and daily usage, you should be looking at a different brand but Hoverheart serves its purpose as an occasional use product.
Features
- Speed: 10 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 7 miles
- Max. Weight Load: 220 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: UL2272
- Other: Bluetooth speakers

9. NHT 6.5” Electric Hoverboard Self Balancing Scooter with Built-In Bluetooth Speaker LED Lights – Best budget hoverboard
The tires on this item are vacuum-sealed, which means a vacuum is used to adhere the tires to the rims or wheel hubs.
While these don’t make for great performance wheels, they do cut out the risk of a flat tire.
Each wheel comes powered with a 350W motor and the item comes kitted with a charger.
The fact that this is the best price hoverboard on the list and it still comes with Bluetooth speakers is very impressive
That said, you should not be expecting high performing speakers.
The body of the hoverboard is made out of carbon fiber making for an incredibly lightweight product (22 Lbs).
But lightweight also comes with drawbacks, product suggestions say to avoid hopping on this scooter if you weight over 180 Lbs.
Battery charging time is on the slow side, 3-4 hours, but riding range is not bad sitting at 7 miles per charge.
However, you have to account for a 6-mph top speed, which means even if you go full speed, it will take you over a full hour to ride the full 7 miles.
Not the best item on the list, but the price tag set on this unit alone makes it the best budget hoverboard on the list.
NHT is a fairly reputable brand, so chances are customer service is at the very least average.
Remember, this is a budget product, so high quality is not what you are striving for here .
Features
- Speed: 6 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 7 miles
- Weight: 20 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 180 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: Ul2272
- Other: Carbon fiber body, 350 WATT motors

10. Swagtron Swagboard T6 – Best Hoverboard for Heavy Adults
So now you have reached the end of the list, chances are you already found a hoverboard that meets all the requirements for you.
But if you still haven’t found the one item that will take a full load of your weight, don’t fear, we have you covered.
However, be reminded that hoverboards, like any other product, keep a safety buffer when calling out specs and usually you will be able to go over the weight limit on your board if it’s a one-time situation.
But if you will be loading the hoverboard with weights over 250 Lbs frequently, then the best hoverboard to buy is the Swagboard T6 from Swagtron, which can withstand weight loads of up to 420 Lbs.
This is THE hoverboard for the heavy adult.
Although not considered to be the best hoverboard ever, the T6 certainly meets its goals of carrying heavy adults and does it at an incredible max speed of 12 mph.
The T6 is considered to be an outdoors item and certainly makes a case for the best off-road hoverboard.
The downside? Two actually: the T6 sits on the heavy side at 32 Lbs and pricing. But all in all, a pretty solid contender.
Features
- Speed: 12 mph
- Distance on Single Charge: 12 miles
- Weight: 32 Lbs.
- Max. Weight Load: 420 Lbs.
- Safety Certification: Bluetooth speakers
- Other: 300 WATT dual motors

Honorable Mentions & Bonus Awards
*Best Brand: It must be evident by now with 3 different items on the list that the price for the best brand for hoverboard goes to Swagtron. For the overall design, quality, reliability and pricing range, Swagtron is the brand that is most likely to put a smile on your face, no matter which one of their designs you go with.
Best Hoverboards 2022 – Buying Guide
Back to the Future – Marty’s favorite toy
You might have just finished reading another best hoverboard review and noticed the unavoidable mention of “Back to the Future 2”
When Marty McFly rides his hoverboard to sneak up on Biff and snatch the sports statistics booklet from the back of his car.
Unavoidable because this was the first time the term “hoverboard” appeared on screen, or anywhere at that stage.
Back in the ‘80s, a hoverboard was just a name for a futuristic, non-existent, gliding skateboard.
If you haven’t seen “Back to the Future 2”, for a reason that escapes us both, then yes, a gliding skateboard is just what you picture it to be. A board that resembles a toy (in the film it was pink and green, a very interesting choice of colors) with no wheels, built for gliding a few inches above the ground.
If you are familiar with hoverboards today, then you are probably thinking this sounds nothing like the real thing, and that’s because it is not like the real thing.
The only real relationship between both is that Marty McFly’s board was also battery powered and believe it or not, came from around the same day and age as the real hoverboards of today.
In the film, Marty, played by Michael J. Fox, takes the hoverboard from his travel in time 30 years into the future to 2015, only to travel back with it to 1955 in order to prevent chaos from unraveling in 1985.
If this has you feeling a little confused, well what can I say?
Time travel can be confusing!
Be this an incredible coincidence or an incredible act of marketing by hoverboard manufacturers in the present, it just makes it unviable to talk about hoverboards without diving into the origins of the name in the renowned film franchise.
Although what we know as hoverboards don’t really have much in common with Marty’s incredible adventures, they do provide the user with battery-powered movement
And make it seem like the user is gliding above the ground, given there are no potholes.
But then the question is there to be answered, what are real hoverboards? How do they work?
And once we know what they are, which is the best hoverboard to buy? Let’s start by answering the first of these questions.
What are Hoverboards?
As we said ealier, hoverboards are electric-powered vehicles, most times with a two-wheel design.
You might have noticed how we said, “mostly two-wheeled”, with technology growing at an accelerated pace, we are now beginning to see self-balancing scooters with designs that carry three, four or even just one wheel.
They come in different sizes, colors and with different performance specifications.
Scooters are all wireless products, because imagine if they weren’t, and they run on Lithium-ion battery packs.
How do Hoverboards Work?
It takes some practice for the rider of the board to stay upright and not fall, some people pick it up in a few minutes, others require much more, and some, like me, just never get the hang of it and prefer to study them and understand them… sad, right?
Whichever type of user you are, Hoverboards all share a similar system between them:
- A gyroscope to help maintain the balance of the board.
Basically, the gyro acts as a tilt sensor that adjusts the position of the board in relation to the rotation of the boards’ wheel(s).
2. Microprocessors are electrical components to the design of the board that regulates the energy provided to the wheels of the board, depending on how acceleration happens in the design of your board.
Some boards have buttons (acting as the gas pedal to your car) and other accelerate based on your position and the incline of your body in relationship to the ground.
Sometimes also known as controller or PCBA, the microprocessor acts as precisely this.
They control the power output generated by the battery and how it is transmitted to the motor on your scooter, to ultimately show itself on the wheels of your vehicle.
3. This points us towards the main component of the hoverboard, and the most expensive component on the product, the battery.
The battery pack has the responsibility of storing the energy that will then be utilized to power the wheels on your board.
But how difficult is this?
It’s more complicated than it sounds.
Batteries need to be able to store large amounts of energy in a short span of time, store the energy without discharging when the board is not in use and ultimately the need to be SAFE.
Batteries this size can be quite dangerous if the highest quality standards are not followed, remember this is an outdoor item you are buying
So batteries need to pass a series of tests like water-immersion, static tests, heat tests, etc.
A great battery will likely mean you have found a great scooter.
4. Last but not least, the motor.
If the battery is the heart of the hoverboard, the motor is the muscles of the system.
When the motor receives the energy output from the battery, its shaft will spin and propel the axle that holds the wheels of your board, hence moving you in a “hovering manner”.
Take off! See more about how does a hoverboard work.
What a Hoverboard Brings to the Table?
Be it the best hoverboard in the world, or the worst, they will both offer an economically accessible short-range mode of transportation.
You have probably been to a city or town where you can find public scooters that rent to the public by the minute
But why rent them if you can own one and not have to go looking for one down the street.
The fact is that hoverboards are not a major investment, some scooters go for as low as $100 USD.
It’s likely that you make your way to the corner shop or the local gas station periodically, often by foot or using another mode of transportation like a bicycle.
There is nothing wrong with riding your bike but there must be hot summer days when you might prefer not to ride your bike and keep your clothes sweat-free.
Let’s face it, we can be lazy, and even if you’re a young active person a lazy time will come or a moment when speed is required.
That is what hoverboards bring to the table, a solution for those moments.
Hoverboards are also portable which means there won’t be a lot of packing to do when moving your hoverboard from one place to another.
And ultimately, they’re just downright fun to ride.
Varying in speed and quality the range of items there is to choose from is vast.
So, let us dive into what is the best hoverboard and find one that suits your needs specifically.
But first, what should you be looking for when shopping for a hoverboard?
Hoverboard Law
Wow, that sounds trippy.
Yes, hoverboard law is an important one to look at before you rush into the store (or go looking on Amazon) to get your toy.
If you’re planning to use it as a toy in-doors, your garage or driveway then you should be ok.
But if you plan on acquiring a hoverboard as a transportation alternative then make sure you are familiar with the laws for transportation in your jurisdiction.
With new laws in some states in the U.S., most likely you live in one that allows for the usage of hoverboards on walkways or bike paths.
Do the research thoroughly and make sure you can use the item for what you intend to use it in.
No use buying on to go back and forth between your bedroom and kitchen.
Safety History
Once again, worth doing the research here.
This time concentrate on looking up the brand that attracts you the most and try to determine if there have been any safety concerns with it in the past.
By safety I don’t mean anything related to falls, I mean more like: exploding batteries.
The reality is that Lithium-ion technology is still a developing technology and safety standards are still “under construction” in a sense.
The author of this guide has lived in China working as a manufacturer of battery packs for appliances, and it’s safe to say that battery safety should not be taken lightly.
The main certificates to take a look at when buying a scooter are UL2272, or if you outside the U.S. make sure the item you are buying is CE and EMC compliant for Europe and SAA and EMC compliant for Australia.
Staying away from hoverboard knock-offs is also a smart idea.
Design
This one might seem obvious but goes deeper than you might think.
Design is not solely based on how appealing the board looks to you, but on how maneuverable and how to fit it is for you.
Some boards are single-wheel designs, others have two wheels that function independently and others have two wheels that function symbiotically.
It will not be long before we start seeing multiple wheel designs and other different riding features.
The fact is, the design will determine how easy it will be for you to adapt to the hoverboard.
Make sure you choose wisely and be mindful of your balancing ability.
Pricing
Most hoverboard reviews will agree with us that pricing is important when they are strictly tied to the specs of the boards.
Most items’ specs tend to be very similar between one another.
Certain design specs might differ but ultimately all items end up having the same material housing, similar wheels and sometimes the same battery.
In many cases, the same boards for different brands are even made in the same factories and yes, made in China.
Our recommendation?
Set up a budget before you go searching for the item you like the most and don’t let yourself be persuaded by a higher price thinking this means higher quality.
Even though in some cases it does, research why it is a higher quality item: better material, longer battery life, better wheels, nicer design, etc.
Appliances rarely have much to differentiate between them apart from ID design
Unless you are comparing a professional item to a DIY unit, the chance is the best price for the hoverboard is the one on the item that suits you the most.
Be objective and not persuaded.
Speed
10 mph is a fair estimate of average speed across all hoverboards.
Although you have the outliers that can go all the way up to the 20-25 mph range and those that rest on the low end of the spectrum at 4-6 mph.
Once again, the importance of this spec will be intimately linked with the usage you are planning to give the product.
I figure you won’t need to go 25 mph from your couch to your kitchen
On the other hand, you don’t want to take an hour to get to the mall for your movie, might as well walk.
Charging Time
Charging time is probably one of the more important features to look at if you’re planning to use the board on a daily basis.
But what is the best hoverboard to get goes beyond just how fast it charges, but how many times a day you can charge it and whether you are planning to use it frequently every day.
If so, look for very short charging times, if the intention is to use it on the way to the office and then back, you are probably fine off compromising on a longer battery charging time and winning on features like speed and sturdiness.
Full charging times may range between 1-4 hours.
Don’t charge overnight and follow the manufacturers charging instructions, remember, battery safety should be high up in your priority list.
Weight
Sorry but I don’t mean the weight of the hoverboard.
It is important that you read the manufacturers suggestion on maximum weight the board can carry.
Most hoverboards cover up to 100 kg (220 lbs).
Retailer
I hate to break it to you
But hoverboards are far from a technology marvel at this point in time and are one of the most common items fabricated in factories all over China.
This means the cost of the item can be optimized in components and ultimately this is translated into product quality as pricing “optimization” is often a synonym for a compromise in quality.
This is where the retailer comes in.
Whether or not your board is the best cheap hoverboard in the market or not, a trusted retailer will guarantee you are getting a safe item.
Of course, cheaper often means lower quality, but if the product specs suit your needs then low pricing is probably good.
Portability
If you’re living in the U.S, I would not worry too much about having to carry your hoverboard outside often
But if you are planning to visit the mall or use the subway and any other public means of transportation
Then it is likely you will have to carry your board under your arm.
Choose one that has a reasonable weight and a design that looks like it’s meant to be picked up. There are many things you should know before you buy a hoverboard and we’ve covered everything you need to know in this comprehensive review !
Happy riding!
